What Is White Phosphorus?

White phosphorus is a chemical substance that ignites when exposed to oxygen. When used in military munitions, it burns extremely hot and produces thick white smoke. 


Because of these properties, militaries have historically used white phosphorus for several purposes, including:

  • Creating smoke screens to hide troop movements

  • Illuminating battlefields at night

  • Marking targets for artillery or aircraft

  • Starting fires to destroy equipment or infrastructure


The substance burns at temperatures that can exceed 800°C (and even higher in some conditions) and continues burning until the phosphorus is fully consumed or deprived of oxygen.


Why Are Phosphorus Bombs So Dangerous?

White phosphorus weapons are controversial primarily because of their severe effects on the human body and the environment.


Severe Burns

When phosphorus particles touch the skin, they can cause deep chemical burns that penetrate tissue and may reach bone. These burns can reignite if exposed to oxygen again.

Burning phosphorus creates smoke that can irritate the eyes, lungs, and skin. In severe exposure cases, toxins can enter the bloodstream and affect organs such as the liver or heart.

Is White Phosphorus Illegal Under International Law?

Not Completely Banned

White phosphorus itself is not classified as a chemical weapon under international conventions because it also has legitimate military uses such as smoke generation and illumination.


However, Its Use Is Restricted

Under Protocol III of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW):

  • Incendiary weapons cannot be used against civilians.

  • They must not be deployed in ways that cause indiscriminate harm.


Using white phosphorus in densely populated areas may therefore violate international humanitarian law.

In many conflicts, the legality depends not on the weapon itself but on how and where it is used.


Environmental Impact of Phosphorus Weapons

Beyond human injuries, phosphorus munitions can also damage ecosystems.
